Terror games on the boob tube
Providing a much-needed break from the typical saas bahu serials is Saaksshi, which will be aired every Saturday, April 10 onwards, at prime time on Sony. The serial has Mouli Ganguly playing Saaksshi Singh, an undercover operative in an anti-terrorist squad. Pitted opposite her is Delhi boy Samir Soni, better known as the new man in Jassi’s life. Soni plays Shekhar Gupta, who heads the squad
The idea was to go beyond kitchen politics and give the audience something that’s real and has greater connectivity. “I play a middle-class girl who tries to balance her personal life while fighting for a larger cause at the same time. It’s a big challenge for me as the character is multidimensional and portrays me in an altogether new light. I’ve never played a strong character fighting against a male-dominated society before,” announces Ganguly.
Soni, who is also looking forward to act opposite Anoushka Shankar in the movie Dance Like A Man, says his role in Saaksshi is quite different from the gentle, understanding, boy next door Purab that he plays in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin.
After 14-hour work days, Soni chills out by reading books penned by his favourite authors Paulo Coelho and Deepak Chopra. “I used to write as a child, and a few years back I thought of compiling it all into a book, but then TV happened so those plans crashed.” As he lives next to a beach, Soni also goes for long walks to unwind. In music, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are his favourites
Ganguly, on the other hand, likes to paint portraits and abstracts. She also wants to watch M F Husains Meenaxi: Tale of Three Cities. “Every frame of Meenaxi looks so beautiful: It is obvious an artist has made the movie. Among books, Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss has left quite an impact on me and I hope to read more of his books,” says Ganguly.
Mouli’s On A Roll
Why Mouli Ganguly left Kahin Kissii Roz:
The daughter of Kolkata-based commercial artist Prithish Ganguly left the serial Kahin Kisi Roz as she had too much on her plate. She found it impossible to refuse an offer from Rituparno Ghosh for his new film Raincoat and then there was Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam on Sahara that she had committed to as well.
Samir Soni Plays second fiddle
“I accept women-centric serials like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin or Saaksshi as there is always room to emote. Finally, it’s my work that will speak for itself. In Saaksshi I get both the women and the action. What more can one ask for.”
