LEGAL EAGLE: Samir Soni in Kumkum — Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan
Samir Soni enters the afternoon Star Plus show Kumkum-Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan today. As Yash Thakur, he plays an extremely high-profiled and successful lawyer who is known in the legal circles for his clean image.
He takes up the main protagonist Kumkum’s (Juhi Parmar) case who is languishing in jail for killing Salil (Kabir Sadanand). It is Sumit (Hussain) who requests him to take her case.
“It’s my first afternoon soap and I am doing a Star Plus show for the first time,” says Soni. “What attracted me was the character. There are so many shades to it. He has seen success, gone through hell — he has been through the highs and lows of life.”
Thakur is shown to take up Kumkum’s case after a seven-year hiatus from the court. “He is a broken man who seeks refuge in alcohol. His past may have be glorious but the present is dreary. The only person he cares for in life is his daughter Gauri,” says Soni about the character.
“He has lost his wife as he was proved wrong in court. Though she was murdered, the law rules that she dies in a hit and run accident. This shatters his ego and he becomes a recluse till Sumit instills that confidence to take up the case and be back to his usual self.”
Soni who was seen in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (Sony) and in Dil Kya Chahta Hai (Star One) looks upon the Kumkum role as part of his experimentation with different types of roles.
“I want to take on diverse projects ultimately it is the character that matters,” he says. On the big screen, he says, “the economics of films demands big stars or you get roles in the so-called skin flicks which I can’t see myself doing.”
